Stearidonic acid (SDA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that belongs to the polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Chemically, it is referred to as 18:4 n-3, which means it has 18 carbon atoms and 4 double bonds, with the first double bond located on the third carbon from the end of the chain (n-3).

A new study conducted by a research team from Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany (see the files tab for the full PDF document download), shows exciting synergistic effects on body composition when combining moderate physical activity with Calanus® oil supplementation.
The study involved 134 healthy, untrained participants (96 women and 38 men, mean age 59 years, mean BMI 28). The participants were divided into four groups. All groups, except the control group, exercised 2 hours per week. In addition, one group received a Calanus® oil supplement and another group received dietary recommendations.
"We see that the use of Calanus® oil has a stronger effect on fat reduction and muscle gain compared to other groups, including the dietary recommendation group. These results are very encouraging and show that Calanus® oil affects the body's energy metabolism in a positive way that cannot be explained by traditional knowledge of omega-3 fatty acids alone. This is the first human clinical study to document an improvement in body composition, but we have already observed this effect in several preclinical studies," says Alice Marie Pedersen, PhD, Calanus' Head of Scientific Research.
Participants who took Calanus® oil while exercising experienced a 1.7 kg reduction in fat mass and a 0.8 kg increase in muscle mass, significantly better results than the other three groups.
Pedersen explains that the significant improvement in body composition is likely the result of several factors. It may be related to anabolic action in muscle tissue and activation of specialized receptors in the distal intestine. These mechanisms are associated with improved insulin sensitivity.
"A summary of clinical findings shows that Calanus® oil helps metabolic tuning of the body by improving body composition, muscle function and blood sugar sensitivity.
These benefits are particularly welcome at a time when obesity-related disorders are a serious threat to public health," concludes Jan Erik Olsen, M.Sc.Pharmacy, Head of Sales and Marketing.
