Art imitates life: the real story
When Badger's founders' daughter, Rebecca, was 20 years old, she was working as a sailor on a sailboat/ frigate. One night there was a terrible storm and the ship was struck by lightning hundreds of miles off the coast. The storm raged all night, and only at dawn did it finally calm down, just as Rebecca was about to go on guard. At that moment, Rebecca experienced one of the most surreal sights of her young life, because when she climbed aboard, instead of chaos, she saw a calm sea with a beautiful, pulsating aurora borealis literally dancing in the sky. At sunrise, dolphins suddenly appeared and started swimming along the side of the sailboat. It was indescribably beautiful...
Rebecca says this: 'That storm, and what happened afterwards, is why I fell in love with the sea. I have learned to embrace my life's journey while being diligent, resilient and enjoying life to the fullest no matter what. Composition and function
SUNFLOWER OIL
Cold-pressed oil from sunflowers grown in Germany (USDA certified Organic, highest quality guarantee). This oil provides a robust and stable base with a smooth consistency for easy application. Badger chose sunflower oil because of its light weight, excellent absorbability and high content of naturally occurring vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant. It is also a source of essential fatty acids that keep the skin soft and supple.
COCONUT OIL (EXTRA VIRGIN)
Obtained using an expeller press (screw press) that mechanically extracts the oil from the nuts, where the temperature never exceeds 50°C, so that the oil retains all its nutrients and enzymes, including flavour and aroma. Grown on the island of SAMOA (USDA certified Organic, guaranteeing the highest quality), where they press this oil for Badger within one hour of cracking the nut to make it as potent and fragrant as possible. The oil obtained in this way is incredibly rich in vitamin E and other powerful antioxidants, plus it has an amazing coconut scent.
THE BEARING VOSK
Sourced from Canada, Australia or Africa (USDA certified Organic, guaranteeing the highest quality). Pure golden beeswax reduces moisture loss from the skin and has an essentially instant soothing effect on chapped skin and injuries. It smells sweetly of honey and Badger uses it for its aforementioned properties and as a natural thickener.
OLIVE OIL (EXTRA VIRGIN)
Cold-pressed from fruit grown on ancient varieties of olive trees in Spain (USDA certified Organic, guaranteeing the highest quality). This superior quality oil contains immense amounts of polyphenols/antioxidants, vitamin E, live enzymes, and natural ferments that give this oil its therapeutic effect. Olive oil is beautifully absorbed, which is why you will find it as the main emollient ingredient in almost all Badger products.
CASTOR OIL
Cold-pressed oil from the seeds of plants grown in India (USDA certified Organic, guaranteeing the highest quality). This oil is deeply nourishing and soothing to the skin and has been used in body care for centuries. Traditionally used as a base healing oil, its purpose is to keep the other ingredients, mainly herbs and spices, as close to the skin as possible.
CARNAUBA WAX
Wax extracted from the leaves of the Brazilian palm Copernicia prunifera (USDA certified Organic, guaranteeing the highest quality). It provides a cohesive consistency and is used as a co-emulsifier (often in conjunction with beeswax) in cosmetic products, has water-repellent properties, and forms a gentle protective film on the skin.
TAMAN OIL
Cold-pressed, very rare oil from the dried kernels of the nuts of the calabash tree, grown in Vietnam (USDA certified Organic, guaranteeing the highest quality). It has a very strong aroma similar to nuts or curry. In some areas of the Polynesian islands, it is used as a traditional remedy to treat skin problems, old wounds and scars.
VITAMIN E
Derived from sunflower oil, antioxidant.
MYRRH TREE
CO2 extract originating from Ethiopia (USDA certified Organic, guarantee of the highest quality). Myrrh resin is used primarily for its fragrance, as its aroma is balsamic, warm and slightly spicy to sweet. For its effects, however, it can also be found as an active ingredient that improves the qualities of a cosmetic product. Myrrh has antiseptic, disinfectant, tonic, anti-inflammatory, astringent and stimulating effects. When applied to the skin, it heals skin infections and otherwise keeps the skin youthful, soft and supple. It has a cooling effect on hot skin.
CALENDULA
CO2 extract originating from Egypt (USDA certified Organic, guarantee of the highest quality). CO2 extract is a beautiful red color with remarkable healing properties for the skin. This herb is rich in carotenoids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Who is behind the Badger brand
In the mid-1990s, founder Bill Whyte worked as a carpenter. His work was physically demanding and his hands often cracked and pinched in the freezing New England winters. One evening, looking for an effective solution, he mixed beeswax with olive oil to create a simple herbal balm. The balm helped him so much that he decided to share it with everyone he knew.
Bill called his new product "Bear Paw" but found that the name was already taken. After a night of deliberation, the next night a new name popped into his head: 'Badger'. With the help of his family, Bill began hand-filling cans in their kitchen. He packed them in handmade wooden boxes, toured hardware stores and sold them out of his work van. And the rest, as they say, is badger history.

Badger believes that finding the best ingredients for their products requires getting closer to the source. They have travelled the world to meet the people who grow, harvest and process the amazing organic ingredients we use in our products.

In 1995, Bill and Katie began hand-filling cans of the original Badger Balm in their kitchen. Twenty-five years later, Badger manufactures nearly 100 products, employs more than 80 people and sells in 15 countries.
