Frankincense is a resin flowing from the Boswellia carterii tree, which grows in Somalia. Incense has been used for centuries in Ayurveda under the name dhoopan. Its aroma is reminiscent of the earthy smell of wood. Frankincense essential oil contains a compound known as boswellic acid. It has been found that this acid can modify the immune system. Studies in mice showed that frankincense helped improve T-cell interactions, promoted antibody production and alleviated hypersensitivity. Patchouli is an essential oil that is ideally paired with frankincense and its Ayurvedic properties are very similar to frankincense. It has a strong earthy aroma and in blends it protects and enhances the other essential oils used. It provides a protective, sweet-woody framework for the other ingredients - in the case of Terre Verdi body oil, the essential oils of frankincense, neroli (bitter orange blossom) and sweet orange peel. Thanks to its chemical composition, it has anti-inflammatory properties and is also used to promote wound healing, against swelling and inflammation of the skin, in the treatment of acne or cracked skin.
