Why buy

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is an edible mushroom from East Asia, where it has been used for its effects for more than 2000 years. It grows naturally on decaying hardwood trees.

Shiitake mushrooms are valued in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for their ability to support QI, which is the concept of life energy that flows through the body and maintains its balance and vitality.

This particular shiitake is certified organic by the British Soil Association Organic and is a 100% pure grade extract from the fruit. It is grown in Qingyuan Province under nature-identical conditions on wood chips.

The extract is extracted with hot water (up to 10:1) to release and concentrate the polysaccharides, including beta-glucans. Contains at least 30% beta-glucans* (min. 240 g) to support the body's defences.

If you are looking for a shiitake mushroom supplement that honors traditional wisdom while meeting modern scientific standards, Mushrooms for Life offers a superior product that is unrivaled on the market.

*In fact, this shiitake contains almost 40% beta-glucans, see the files tab. Beta-glucans are polysaccharides known for their ability to support the immune system, regulate cholesterol and contribute to heart and digestive health. They can come from a variety of sources, including fungi, cereals (e.g. oats) and yeast.
Beta-glucans from mushrooms have a unique structure and are considered to be more effective in supporting the immune system compared to those from cereals or yeast. This difference is due to their higher concentration and more specific binding of polysaccharides, which better activate immune cells.
While beta-glucans from cereals have their benefits mainly for heart health and cholesterol reduction, beta-glucans from mushrooms have a broader spectrum of action, especially in the area of immunity.
Beta-glucans from yeast are also effective, but fungi often offer a more complex bioactive composition, making them in some cases preferred for therapeutic purposes.

For whom is shiitake intended

  • Supporting QI and immunity: Shiitake are used to boost QI, which is important for maintaining the vitality and immunity of the body. According to TCM, they help harmonize the overall flow of energy through the body.

  • Digestive support: shiitake mushrooms are traditionally used to improve digestion, as in TCM they have the ability to harmonize stomach energy and thus contribute to better digestion and nutrient absorption.

  • Cholesterol balance and circulation: in TCM, shiitake is believed to help improve QI circulation and promote strong liver function, which has a positive effect on blood circulation and overall body balance.

  • Suitable for vegans: shiitake are recognised in TCM as an excellent source of nutrition, rich in vitamins and amino acids, which is particularly beneficial for those who consume a predominantly plant-based diet.

This traditional approach offers a comprehensive way to promote health and balance energy in a natural way.

*Pure Grade Mushroom Extract refers to a high quality mushroom extract that has undergone an extraction process aimed at releasing as many bioactive compounds as possible, especially polysaccharides such as beta-glucans.
For mushroom supplements such as capsules and powders, extracts referred to as "drinks grade" are often used, which contain high amounts of maltodextrin. This filler facilitates encapsulation and gives the product a sweeter taste.
Conversely, Pure Grade represents the mark of the highest quality mushroom supplements that do not contain fillers such as maltodextrin and provide a pure, concentrated extract with a higher active ingredient content.
These extracts are produced using heat (often hot-water extraction) and in some cases alcohol, releasing not only the water-soluble but also the alcohol-soluble components. These extracts are considered to be more concentrated and effective than conventional mushroom powders.
However, there are products on the market that are of lesser quality, sometimes referred to as drinking-grade or 1:1 ratio extracts. These products are often just dried and ground mushrooms without actual extraction, which means they do not contain enough bioactive ingredients.
Companies can thus cheat customers by selling products that have not undergone a rigorous extraction process but merely contain mushrooms in powder form, which reduces their effectiveness. Some of these products may be cheaper, but do not reach the quality or therapeutic properties of a true mushroom extract.
For quality assurance, it is recommended to focus on products with a specified beta-glucan content that have undergone either hot-water extraction or dual extraction (combination of water and alcohol), depending on the type of mushroom.
It is important to pay attention to production methods and mushroom sources, as products made from poor quality mushrooms or without proper extraction may be less effective and beneficial.
**Many dietary supplement manufacturers actually use maltodextrin as a cheap filler without clearly stating this on the label, which can be misleading to consumers. Maltodextrin is often used to increase the volume of capsules and powders, especially where the amount of active ingredient is too small to fill an entire capsule.
This low-cost filler may form a significant proportion of some products without being clearly listed among the ingredients, which is allowed if maltodextrin is used in minimal quantities or is part of other ingredients.
This leads to the fact that manufacturers can claim that their capsule contains a high amount of mushroom extract, but in fact it contains a much smaller amount of active ingredients and a larger proportion of filler, such as just maltodextrin.
This trick is possible because it is not mandatory in some cases to explicitly mention maltodextrin if it is part of other ingredients or in small quantities. Consumers should therefore be cautious and choose products from manufacturers that clearly state the active ingredient content and the amount of beta-glucans in the extract.
It is also recommended to verify the transparency of the brand regarding the production methods to ensure that the product contains a real amount of active ingredients and is not just filled with cheap fillers.
***A good indicator of transparency and true quality is the organic certification from a reputable organisation such as Soil Association Organic.
The Soil Association Organic certification offers consumers an important assurance when choosing mushroom supplements. Products with this certification must meet strict organic standards, which means that the mushrooms are grown without the use of pesticides, fungicides and artificial fertilizers. This is particularly important for fungi, which are very porous and readily absorb substances from the environment, including potentially harmful chemicals.
Soil Association certification also means that products are 100% transparent, traceable and environmentally friendly. Customers can be sure that they are choosing a product that not only supports their health but also protects the environment. When choosing between mushroom brands, Soil Association certification is a strong indicator of product quality and integrity

Interesting facts about the shiitake mushroom

Shiitake is the so-called "fragrant mushroom", which not only has great supportive effects on our body, but also a great taste. In the kitchen, it is used in soups, sauces and stir-fry dishes for its meaty texture and strong flavour.

In TCM, QI is the foundation of vitality - when QI is balanced, the body functions properly, if it is weakened or blocked, fatigue, illness or other health problems can occur.

In Japan, shiitake mushrooms have been recognized for centuries not only as a tasty part of the diet, but also as a natural means of promoting overall physical fitness.

Traditionally, they have been used to support the body's resilience due to their content of polysaccharides such as lentinan, which helps the body respond better to external influences.

They are also valued for their antioxidant properties, which protect cells from damage and thus contribute to overall vitality and protection of the body from undesirable influences.

Modern research is investigating their effects on reducing inflammation and possible positive effects on maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and supporting heart function.

Shiitakes are also used as a source of vitamin D, which helps maintain bone quality.

Historically, shiitake mushrooms were cultivated as early as the 12th century in the mountains of China and were considered a remedy for longevity. In Japan, shiitakes were even given to emperors as a symbol of vitality.

Active substances in the mushroom:

Shiitake mushrooms contain a number of active ingredients that are valued in TCM for their beneficial effects. Among the main ones is lentinan, a polysaccharide known for its ability to protect DNA from oxidative damage and promote protection of the body from undesirable influences. Lentinan also has strong antifungal properties.

Another important ingredient is beta-glucans, which support the body's defences and contribute to overall vitality. Finally, erythadenine, which is a natural component of shiitake, may contribute to the harmonization of the circulatory system, especially thanks to its plant sterols.

Shiitake mushrooms contain all 8 essential amino acidsmaking them a complete source of protein. These amino acids, which the body cannot make on its own, are essential for various functions in the body, including protein synthesis and muscle maintenance. These 8 amino acids include leucine, isoleucine, valine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine and tryptophan.

Shiitake mushrooms are also rich in b vitamins, especially vitamins B5 (pantothenic acid), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin) a B6which are important for energy production, metabolism and overall well-being.

Shiitake can also be used as an aid in cleansing the body - it works similarly to seaweedit can bind heavy metals.

Shiitake and other mushrooms - synergy:

Shiitake mushrooms are known for their traditional use in promoting overall vitality and well-being. Some other mushrooms may complement their effects or offer similar benefits.

  • Reishia: Often referred to as the "mushroom of immortality," reishi is used in traditional systems to support balanced body functioning and stress management. In combination with shiitake, reishi can strengthen the overall effect on the body.

  • Maitakea: This mushroom, known for its use in cooking and traditional medicine, is often combined with shiitake for its ability to promote balance in the body. In some blends, maitake is combined with shiitake and reishi for a more complex action.

  • Cordycepsa: This mushroom is valued for its vitality-enhancing properties and balanced body function. Combined with shiitake, Cordyceps can help harmonize the body's functions in challenging conditions.

Together, these mushrooms can offer a comprehensive approach to supporting the body's balance, vitality and stress management, especially in blends that rely on their synergistic effect.

Shiitake and Ayurveda - synergy:

Shiitake mushrooms can also be supplemented with several herbs to enhance their effects:

  • Astragalus (Astragalus)a: This adaptogenic herb is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to promote overall balance in the body. In combination with shiitake, it can help harmonize the body's functions and contribute to maintaining vitality.

  • Turmerica: Because of its properties to promote balance in the body, turmeric is often used along with shiitake to ensure overall well-being and maintain healthy joint and liver function. Together they can contribute to the balance of the body.

  • Gingera: Traditionally used to aid digestion and the overall well-being of the digestive system. Ginger complements shiitake well and helps optimize digestive function and overall vitality.

  • Ashwagandhaa: Ashwagandha, like shiitake, is an adaptogen that supports the body's resilience in challenging conditions. In combination, they can contribute to maintaining the overall balance and vitality of the body.

Usage:

Shiitake powder is most often recommended to take in the evening*, e.g. in cocoa is fine. It blends well with the subtly bitter flavour of cocoa and although it can alter the flavour of the drink slightly, it usually adds a deeper umami note that is not too pronounced.

Shiitake has a mild, sweet and slightly salty profile that complements the rich taste of cocoa. Many people find that the combination of cocoa and medicinal mushrooms such as shiitake improves the overall experience of the drink and brings additional health benefits.

If you are sensitive to changes in taste, it is recommended to start with a smaller amount of powder and gradually increase it as you get used to the taste.

Evening is recommended for the reason that it supports the body's natural processes that take place during rest, such as immune and liver functions.

Still, shiitake can also be taken during the day, especially with meals, which helps better absorption of active compounds such as beta-glucans, which are fat-soluble.

It is advisable to take shiitake with food to maximize absorption. It is also a good idea to take breaks, for example, not taking them 2 days a week, so that the body does not build up a tolerance to the supplements and can benefit from them in the long term.

*Shiitake mushroom powder can easily be added to soups, especially broths or miso soup, where it blends well with other flavors. You can also add it to the following dishes:
  • Soups: add the powder to vegetable or broth soups, where it will enhance their flavor and add an umami tone.
  • Stews: It is also suitable for slow cooked dishes such as various stews where the powder can dissolve evenly.
  • Pasta sauces: stir the powder into pasta sauces, whether cream or tomato, where it adds a subtle earthy flavour.
  • Rice or cereal dishes: the powder can be added to cooked rice, quinoa or other cereals after they are cooked.
  • Smoothies: if you prefer something quick, you can add the powder to an evening smoothie with cocoa, where its flavour blends well with sweeter drinks.
This way, you can easily include shiitake in your evening meal and ensure its better absorption and effectiveness.

Dosage

The dosage of shiitake depends on the form of the supplement and the purpose for which you are taking it. The following is usually recommended:

  • Amniotic fluid extract: The recommended daily dose of the extract is around 1-3 grams. This dose should contain at least 240 mg of beta-glucans, which are the key active ingredient. 1 g of this Shiitake powder is equivalent to a minimum of 340 g of beta-glucans.

  • Dried mushrooms: If you use ordinary dried berries, the daily dose is around 5-15 grams.

  • Long-term use: when taking shiitake for a long time, it is advisable to cycle the doses, which means taking the supplements for example 5 days a week and letting the body rest for 2 days to avoid building up a tolerance.

If you have specific health needs or are unsure of the dosage, it is best to consult a professional therapist*.
