It meets strict kosher processing standards, ensuring maximum purity and quality. Kosher certification by the OU (Orthodox Union).

What exactly is "Kosher salt"?

Kosher salt is not just a marketing name - it has a specific texture, production method and unique properties that distinguish it from regular coarse salt.

Redmond kosher salt production: only grinding and sifting to achieve the characteristic flaky, coarse texture. Nothing more.

Certified quality – Kosher certification

Redmond Real Salt® is officially certified kosher by the recognized certifying authority, the Orthodox Jewish Union, OU. This certification means it meets strict standards for sourcing, processing and packaging.

For the consumer, it is a guarantee of purity and premium quality without any impurities or chemical additives.

Unique flaky structure

Kosher salt is known for its larger, flaky crystals (often referred to as "flake salt"). This specific texture offers several advantages:

  • Precise control over the salt - you can easily dose the amount as needed.
  • Even distribution on the surface of food - ideal for the final seasoning of food.
  • Faster and more even dissolving - a great choice for sauces and marinades.

Important notice

Many people confuse kosher salt with coarse salt, but the difference is crucial. The flake structure allows for better moisture absorption (especially from meat) while providing a cleaner, less bitter taste.

A Brief History of Kosher Salt

Originally, kosher salt was intended to remove blood from meat according to Jewish dietary rules. Today, however, it has become a staple in professional restaurants and home kitchens around the world.

It is appreciated by chefs for its ease of use, clean taste and wide culinary applications.

📌 Do you want the salt that the professionals use? Try Redmond Real Salt® Kosher and discover the difference!

Why kosher salt is popular with cooks and housewives

Flake-like crystal structure

Kosher salt has larger flakes that make it easy to scoop and dispense accurately.

The larger crystals dissolve evenly on the surface of the food and ensure a uniform saltiness.

Pure, unadulterated taste

Unlike regular table salt, kosher salt does not contain iodine or anti-caking agents that can alter the taste of food.

The result is a cleaner and more natural salty taste without the "chemical" touch.

Better control over salting

Thanks to the coarser crystals, you can see exactly how much salt you are adding and thus avoid oversalting and under-seasoning.

It is also great for the final salting on the plate, when each bite gets an extra crunch.

Practical use of kosher salt in the kitchen

Pickling and seasoning meat

  • Dry brining: sprinkle kosher salt on the meat at least 30 minutes before grilling or baking. The salt draws out the excess moisture, which is then absorbed and helps the meat to be more tender and tasty.

  • Why kosher salt: Larger flakes adhere better to the surface of the meat and salt it evenly.

Grilling and BBQ

  • Final sprinkle: Sprinkle finished steaks or burgers lightly with kosher salt for a crispy effect and intense flavour.

  • Base for the BBQ mix (reverse): kosher salt is often used as the main ingredient in the spice mix (paprika, sugar, chilli) because it does not dissolve too quickly and is effective throughout the barbecue.

Vegetables and salads

  • Roasted vegetables: Toss chopped carrots, potatoes or zucchini with olive oil and kosher salt. In the oven, the flake salt is lightly toasted, which enhances the sweetness of the baked ingredients.
  • Leaf salads: a light sprinkling of kosher salt on the lettuce leaves before dressing will enhance the flavour without over-salting.

Pickling and fermentation

  • Fermenting vegetables: for sauerkraut, pickles or kimchi, kosher salt is particularly suitable because it does not contain added chemicals that could interfere with the fermentation process.

  • Cucumbers in brine: The coarser salt dissolves evenly in the water, so you can easily control the saltiness of the brine.

Baking bread and dough

  • Balanced saltiness: when incorporating kosher salt into the dough, a slightly larger volume than table salt is sufficient (due to the lower density). The result is a natural taste without the unwanted chemical tones that can occur with iodized salts.

  • Crispy crust: for a perfect crust, you can sprinkle the surface of the dough with coarse flakes just before baking.

Recommended tips and tricks

  • Adjust the amount: 1 teaspoon of regular table salt is equivalent to approximately 1.25-1.5 teaspoons of kosher salt (depending on the brand and size of the crystals).

  • Salt with your hands: Use a pinch between your fingers - this gives you a better sense of how much salt you're actually using.

  • Taste continuously: although kosher salt makes it easier to control, taste is always crucial.

  • Proper storage: store kosher salt in a tightly sealed container in a dry place (to prevent moisture penetration and clumping). Many cooks keep it on hand in a small bowl next to the stove.

Summary

In professional restaurants and in the home, kosher salt has made its way into the market thanks to its easy dosage, clean taste and versatile use.

Whether you're preparing steak, homemade sourdough bread or fermented vegetables, kosher salt helps you precisely balance the saltiness and bring out the natural flavours of the ingredients.

Test the difference: test for yourself how much more evenly and accurately kosher salt is applied compared to regular salt. You will see that this small change can have a big impact on the final taste and texture of your food.

Recipe: grilled steaks with kosher salt

Why kosher salt?

Kosher salt (coarser flakes) is ideal for even penetration of salt into the meat. The larger crystals also help to remove surface moisture and create a crispy crust on the steak.

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

  • 2 beef steaks (rib-eye, flank or sirloin to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon freshly ground pepper
  • Oil for coating (olive or vegetable)

Procedure

  • Preparation of the meat: Take the steaks out of the fridge and let them come to room temperature (about 20-30 minutes).
  • Salting: sprinkle the meat on both sides thoroughly with kosher salt and let rest for 15-20 minutes. This releases some of the moisture from the meat and allows the salt to penetrate deeply.
  • Rubbing and seasoning: wipe off excess crystals, brush steaks with oil and sprinkle with ground pepper.
  • Grilling: Heat the grill (or pan) to high heat. Sear the steaks for 2-3 minutes on each side (depending on the desired degree of doneness).
  • Rest: Let the meat rest for 5 minutes to allow the juices inside to spread evenly.

Serving

Serve with vegetable salad or grilled vegetables. We recommend adding a pinch of kosher salt on top shortly before serving to enhance the flavor.

FAQ

Is Real Salt® protected from radiation?

Real Salt was thoroughly tested by Geiger counter and no radiation was detected.

Have you ever wondered if Real Salt may have been affected by the 1950 nuclear tests in Nevada? It's a legitimate question! But we have good news for you - Real Salt has been thoroughly tested by Geiger counter and no radiation has been detected.

Here's a closer look at why Real Salt is safe when it comes to these radiation concerns. When experts examine possible exposure to external radiation, they usually talk about three factors:

  • Time: Radiation from events like the Nevada nuclear test in the 1950s decays very quickly. Most gamma rays are significantly reduced within a few days.
  • Distance: Redmond, Utah, where Real Salt is mined, is 300 miles from the Nevada test area and 120 miles from the affected "down-winder" districts. This distance significantly reduces the potential impact.
  • Shielding: The Real Salt deposit is located 20-30 feet below compacted soil and is mined from a depth of 700 feet. This natural barrier provides significant protection from possible radiation from the surface.

While it is true that all soil on Earth has some level of natural radioactivity, you can rest assured that Real Salt has been tested and there is no excessive radiation from the 1950 tests.

In addition, the distance from the test area and the natural ground cover make Real Salt safe. You can therefore use it with confidence when flavouring your food.

Does Real Salt® contain heavy metals?

Real Salt contains trace amounts of naturally occurring mineral elements, including some so-called heavy metals, but these are fundamentally different from man-made metals.

We appreciate you taking an interest in food composition and trying to reduce your exposure to heavy metals. We also choose the foods we eat carefully.

At the same time, we know that heavy metals are commonly found in nature - in the air, water and soil. Therefore, trace amounts are found in virtually all foods.

Because we cannot avoid consuming trace met als, we consider three factors when choosing foods: the form of the metal, the amount we ingest from a particular food, and the health benefits of that food. Let's briefly explain each of these points.

Form is important

It only takes a few minutes of researching nutrition and you'll find that form really is key. Whether a fat, sugar or carbohydrate is "good" or "bad" depends on where it comes from, how it is processed and how the body reacts to it.

For example, a healthy person can safely enjoy a medium avocado with 22 grams of fat. But the body reacts quite differently if the same amount of fat comes from fast food fries. The difference is in the degree of processing and the form of fat.

It is similar for minerals and metals. In nature you will not find pure sodium or chlorine, but always bound in various compounds. If one refines them into a pure form, they become highly reactive.

The Real Salt analysis contains 65 minerals, including several metals that Mother Nature put there millions of years ago. These metals are bound to other elements and are in a non-fluid form that is generally considered safe.

Salt is only a fraction of the diet

Many popular fruits and vegetables (kale, lettuce, onions, spinach, carrots) contain heavy metals from the soil. Metals are also in the water we drink. Compared to our daily food and water consumption, salt is a small part of our intake.

An example would be lead. If you drink 75 ounces of water with 5 ppb of lead, you get about 11 µg of lead. For Real Salt, we list the highest value ever detected at 200 ppb (some tests detect nothing). If you ate 6 g of salt with 200 ppb of lead, you would only get 1.2 µg of lead.

It is important to have an overview.

Trace metals are found in so many natural and healthy foods that it is difficult to avoid them completely. If we tried to avoid them altogether, we would lose valuable nutrients that can benefit us more than the tiny traces of metals can harm us.

The US FDA mentions that if tests show lead, it does not necessarily mean that the food should be discarded. According to her and other institutions, good nutrition can help the body better process minute amounts of these substances.

That's why we and thousands of our customers believe in the benefits of natural, unrefined foods. We've been selling Real Salt for decades and always test it to make sure it's safe.

Trojúhelník

How do I know that the trace amounts of heavy metals in Real Salt® are safe?

Although trace amounts of various natural elements are found in most foods (including Real Salt), we believe there are more benefits to eating natural, unrefined products than switching to highly processed alternatives.

You may have noticed in the elemental analysis (see the Elemental Salt Analysis files) for Real Salt that there is an average of 200 ppb (parts per billion) of lead per serving. Because Real Salt is all-natural, this value may vary slightly. The 200 ppb figure is based on long-term tests.

It is important to so-called Provisional Tolerable Intake (PTI), i.e. the amount that the body can safely process on a daily basis. For lead, this is around 30 µg for an adult. Even if Real Salt contained 290 ppb, you would have to eat about 75 servings (about 6 tablespoons) of salt a day to get to that level. Nobody normally does that.

Similarly, for arsenic, the PTI is about 2.14 µg per kilogram of weight, so for a 185 pound person, you would have to eat 1500 servings of Real Salt per day. Therefore, despite these trace amounts, we believe in the overall benefits of unrefined products.

We understand that each person has different health needs and priorities. However, we are committed to keeping Real Salt safe and will be happy to provide further information if you are unsure.

Trojúhelník

Does Real Salt ® contain aluminum?

Real Salt contains trace amounts of natural aluminosilicate, which is completely different from the metallic aluminium used in antiperspirants or films.

We understand that you want to avoid exposure to aluminum. We are also cautious. But we also know that aluminium is the third most abundant element on Earth. Therefore, small trace amounts are found in water, soil, fruit, vegetables, meat and salt.

Because it cannot be avoided altogether, we consider form and quantity when choosing foods. But each person can set their own boundaries.

Not all aluminium is the same

You will find trace amounts of aluminium in the Real Salt analysis, but the important thing is that it is a natural compound (aluminosilicate). Aluminium metal as we know it from industrial production does not occur naturally in nature.

Similar to sodium and chlorine, whose pure forms are dangerous but are safe for us in salt (NaCl), aluminium in aluminosilicate is considered inert and less reactive.

How much aluminum is too much?

The ATSDR* reports that the average adult in the U.S. eats 7-9 mg of aluminum per day. The WHO(World Health Organisation) sets a weekly limit of 2 mg/kg of weight. If you weigh 70 kg, it is 140 mg per week.

Real Salt contains approximately 0.05% aluminium, or 0.7 mg per 1/4 teaspoon (1,400 mg of salt). This means that you would have to eat over 7 teaspoons a day to exceed this limit, which is many times more than people normally consume.

So, our experience is that Real Salt is not a significant source of aluminium for most people.

*ATSDR stands for Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry in the USA. This agency falls under the Department of Health and Human Services (U.WITH. Department of Health and Human Services) and works closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Its task is to investigate, evaluate and monitor possible health risks associated with exposure to toxic substances and to provide expert advice to the public and government institutions.
Trojúhelník

Does Real Salt ® contain iron?

Real Salt contains trace amounts of iron, a mineral with many important functions in the body.

Sometimes people ask us: Why is there iron in Real Salt, how much is there, and is it a problem? We're glad you're thinking about what you eat. At the same time, we are pleased that there is a small amount of iron in Real Salt. It helps red blood cells transport oxygen and influences the production of hormones.

What is iron?

The NIH* describes it as a mineral essential for growth and development. The body uses it to make haemoglobin in red blood cells and myoglobin in muscles. It is also needed for the production of certain hormones. Everyone has a different need depending on age and other factors.

*NIH stands for National Institutes of Health in the United States. This is a major agency under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).WITH. Department of Health and Human Services). NIH funds and conducts research in medicine and biomedical sciences and publishes important information and recommendations on health and treatment of various diseases. In the context of nutrition and dietary supplements, it often serves as a trusted source of various facts, recommendations and guidelines.

Why is there iron in Real Salt®?

According to scientists, iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust and is also found in seawater. Real Salt comes from a long-dry sea, so it's not surprising that it contains trace amounts of iron. We're just grinding salt to a suitable coarseness, that's all.

How much iron does Real Salt® contain?

From our long-term analysis, we know that 1/4 teaspoon (1,400 mg) of Real Salt has an average of 0.42 mg of iron. It is unlikely to be 100% absorbable. Even if it were, it is only a small percentage of most people's daily needs.

Summary

For the average person, this is a negligible amount. If you are more sensitive to iron, consult your doctor. Anyway, you can't just rely on Real Salt for iron deficiency, but for most people it's fine.

Trojúhelník

Does Real Salt ® contain lead?

We have conducted a number of tests and occasionally find the naturally occurring mineral element lead in trace amounts in Real Salt.

We appreciate your concern about food composition and we are also very cautious about lead. We also know that lead is widespread in the Earth's crust and is found in soil, water, vegetables, fruit and other food.

It is virtually impossible to avoid it altogether, which is why we consider both quantity and form. But everyone can set their own approach.

Lead in food

You may know about the FDA's strict limits for water (15 ppb). Less talked about is the fact that lead is commonly found in fruits, vegetables, juices, sweets or even baby food.

When comparing ppm and ppb values, we must take into account how much of the food (or water) we consume per day. 1 ppm = 1000 ppb. This explains why the limit for water may be different from that for confectionery.

Elemental elements in Real Salt®

Real Salt is 100% natural, so the content of different elements may vary slightly. For lead, we report the highest value ever measured at 200 ppb, although sometimes we do not detect it at all.

At first glance this may seem like a lot compared to 15 ppb for water. But if you drink more than 2 litres of water a day, you will take in more lead from it than from 6 g of Real Salt with 200 ppb.

In other words: While from 2 litres of water with 15 ppb of lead you take in 30 µg of the element lead, from 6 g of salt with 200 ppb it is only 1.2 µg. Thus, several times less lead comes from salt than from water.

Summary

Lead is found in trace amounts almost everywhere in nature. The body can usually cope with a minimum of these substances. This doesn't mean we should seek them out, but we find trace amounts in natural foods less problematic than they may seem.

  • Lead from modern pollution (industrial effluents, incineration, batteries, etc.) arises from human activities, is often in more easily reactive forms that can have higher toxicity and is present in the environment in unnatural concentrations.
  • The naturally occurring lead in salt (e.g. Real Salt) is part of an ancient salt deposit and is found in moderate, trace amounts usually bound to other minerals. These forms of lead are generally less reactive and less problematic, especially when present in very low concentrations.

Real Salt is thoroughly tested and we would never sell something that was not safe.

Trojúhelník

Does Real Salt® contain the iodine we need?

Unrefined sea salt contains small amounts of natural iodine. But even iodized salt may not be the best source.

Most manufacturers refine table salt and remove all the trace minerals, adding just enough iodine to label the salt as iodized. In contrast, Real Salt is ancient unrefined sea salt, so we don't add or subtract anything.

How much iodine is in one serving of Real Salt®?

When the Utah deposit was formed, Mother Nature supplied about 18-23 µg of iodine in each 1/4 teaspoon. That's about 10% of the Institute of Medicine's recommended daily dose of 150 µg, but less than in artificially iodized salts.

Is iodized salt the best source of iodine?

Not necessarily. The body often responds better to natural sources of iodine than to artificially added iodine in refined salt. If you have access to iodine-rich foods or supplements, this is a better route. For simple iodine supplementation we recommend e.g. Re-Lyte Hydration Support Plus capsules with 150 µg of iodine from seaweed.

What is the difference between Redmond Real Salt®, Celtic and Himalayan salt?

Today we're going to do something most companies don't do: say some nice things about the competition. However, this does not mean that we praise bitter, chemically treated table salt. If you know the health benefits of Real Salt, you know that Real Salt and table salt are not the same thing. But we often hear the question: what is the difference between Redmond Real Salt and Celtic or Himalayan salt?

(You may wonder why we only mention Celtic and Himalayan salt. That's because we are first and foremost salt lovers. If Real Salt wasn't, we'd be considering these two.)

Real Salt® salt

Real Salt is an all-natural, unrefined sea salt from the ancient sea, full of natural minerals, with a pink or reddish hue. We are also the best-selling brand in health food stores in the US. Our deposit is in Redmond (Utah) where we have excellent working conditions and control the entire process from mining to packaging. This is how Real Salt will reach you in its original, mineral-rich and tasty form.

Celtic salt

Celtic Sea Salt originates from today's ocean in France. It is harvested by hand, remains unprocessed and thus retains its trace minerals. The main difference from Real Salt is that today's ocean is already exposed to human pollution (mercury, lead, plastics, oil toxins). Celtic salt is very moist and interesting in taste and texture. Personally, we prefer the ancient sea, but Celtic salt is also a great choice.

American brand that owns several sub-brands such as Real Salt, Earth Powder, Redmond Clay, Earth Paste and others. But one thing they all have in common - they are two high-quality and 100% pure raw materials that Redmond specializes in extracting and processing. It's Redmond clay and Real Salt. These two ingredients form the basis of most of their products and work well on their own, of course. Redmond is mined in the rare high-desert Redmond region (as the brand name refers to) in Utah. These are some of the oldest deposits, making these raw materials uniquely pristine, untouched and unpolluted by modern harmful substances.
