Sulphur (Maitake)
In Europe and the United States, this mushroom (Grifola frondosa) is commonly called "forest hen" because its front growths resemble the feathers of a fluffy hen. In Japan, maitake mushrooms are called "dancing mushroom". According to Japanese legend, a group of Buddhist monks and woodcutters met on a mountain trail where they discovered maitake mushrooms growing out of the forest floor. They rejoiced at the discovery of this delicious mushroom and danced in celebration. In Italy, this species is known as a signorina or "unmarried woman".
Maitake contains vitamins B2, niacin and vitamin D, fiber, polysaccharides, antioxidants and minerals. In Chinese medicine, they are also used to treat diabetes and hypertension.
Research
Although Maitake has been used in medicine for thousands of years, modern research is still somewhat limited. Most of the available research so far focuses mainly on its potential benefits for the treatment and prevention of cancer and for boosting the immune system.
Immunoregulation
Mushrooms have long been considered to have immunostimulatory properties, and some research has identified Maitake as one of the most effective functional mushrooms for boosting the immune system.
One study compared the effects of Shitake, Maitake and their combination on boosting immunity. The research found that the combined extract was the most active in terms of stimulating the immune system's defence response. Separately, maitake was second most effective in stimulating immune responses.
Cancer
A 2012 study found that maitake extract effectively destroys human cancer cells while increasing the effectiveness of concurrently used cancer-fighting proteins.
A 2013 study concluded that Maitake extract may be able to prevent the growth and proliferation of cancer cells, specifically that it may be useful in the prevention or treatment of breast cancer.
Another animal study in 2013 found that Maitake can help suppress tumor growth while boosting the immune response against the tumor. Mice were found to have a higher number of active immune cells fighting tumor growth after regular doses of Maitake.
More research is needed to fully understand how different Maitake preparations can be used to treat cancer in humans, but the overall potential for boosting immunity is promising.
Cholesterol
A 2013 study found that Maitake extract could be beneficial for lowering high cholesterol, although the study involved animals. Of course, the study also linked Maitake to other nutritional benefits, such as an increase in fatty acids that are converted into energy, which may help maintain a healthy circulatory system.
Diabetes
A 2015 study investigated the potential benefits of Maitake mushrooms for rats with type 2 diabetes. Regular consumption of Maitake led to lower glucose levels. The authors believe that these results could also be seen in people with diabetes, but more research is needed.

About the brand
Mushrooms For Life was originally founded in 2011 by well-known naturopath and author Martin Powell with the goal of making the best mushroom supplements widely available and accessible.
Martin, who is fluent in Mandarin, spent many years in China working with experienced local growers to ensure Mushrooms For Life sourced the highest quality ingredients; this is still the brand's focus today.
In 2017 Martin entrusted Mushrooms For Life to his colleagues and experienced mushroom educators Graham Botfield and Ben Shouler, who continue his work to this day.
We use only the highest quality organic ingredients that are carefully selected to take full advantage of each mushroom's function
Tradition and quality
We source only the highest quality organically grown mushrooms from our growers in China. The use of medicinal mushrooms has been a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine and this practice dates back thousands of years.
No country has more extensive knowledge of mushroom cultivation and sourcing than China. China is also home to some of the world's largest and cleanest forests, which provide an ideal environment for fungi to grow.
Based on ongoing DNA analyses, it is widely known that China grows the highest quality mushrooms in the world.
