What is hydroxocobalamin?
Hydroxocobalamin is a natural form of vitamin B12, which is converted in the body into biologically active forms - methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
In contrast to synthetic cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin is more easily stored in the body and is excreted more slowly, ensuring the long-term availability of vitamin B12 for the body.
Why choose Metabolics Hydroxocobalamin?
- 100% bioactive form of B12 with high bioavailability.
- Slower excretion from the body, which ensures long-term action.
- Suitable for people with sensitivity to methylcobalamin.
Who is hydroxocobalamin suitable for?
- People with insufficient vitamin B12 intake, including vegans and vegetarians.
- People looking for a long-acting form of B12 with high bioavailability.
- Those who prefer the unmethylated form of vitamin B12 and want it to be naturally converted into active coenzymes in the body.
- If you prefer the directly active methylated form, methylcobalamin is recommended. It is used directly in the processes of methylation, which are important, for example, for the proper function of the nervous system and homocysteine metabolism.
Health Benefits of Hydroxocobalamin
-
Contributes to normal energy metabolism
Vitamin B12 plays an important role in the conversion of nutrients into energy, which helps reduce the rate of fatigue and exhaustion.
-
Supports normal activity of the nervous system
B12 is important for the proper function of the nervous system and contributes to normal mental activity.
-
Involved in the formation of red blood cells
Vitamin B12 contributes to the normal production of red blood cells, which are essential for the proper transfer of oxygen in the body.

- The indication of 3 months is given by the manufacturer for the reason that after 3 months the manufacturer can no longer guarantee that there will be exactly the amount of vitamin B12 in one drop as declared on the label.
- When stored in a refrigerator, without access to light, acidic environment and when sterile dosed on a spoon (not directly into the mouth), the product can be used for a longer period of time.
- Due to the limited shelf life, we recommend that the whole family consume this vitamin so that it is used in its entirety and no losses occur.
Are blood tests for B12 useful?
Routine blood tests for B12 can be misleading because they measure the total amount of the vitamin in the blood but do not distinguish between the active and inactive forms. Even people with "normal" levels can have a functional deficiency if their body cannot use B12 effectively.
More reliable diagnostics are tests for holotranscobalamin (Holo-TC), which shows only active B12, methylmalonic acid (MMA), whose elevated levels indicate B12 deficiency at the cellular level, or homocysteine, whose higher levels may indicate problems with B12, B6 and folic acid metabolism.
Testing is especially recommended for vegans, seniors and people with nutrient absorption disorders (low stomach acid, celiac disease, SIBO, Crohn's disease).
Symptoms of deficiency include chronic fatigue, tingling and numbness in the limbs, memory problems, irritability or pale skin. If you are in a high-risk group or have these symptoms, it may be more effective to supplement with bioactive forms of B12(hydroxocobalamin or methylcobalamin) rather than relying on laboratory values that may not accurately reflect the actual state of the body.
What tests for B12 are the most reliable?
- Holotranscobalamin (Holo-TC) - measures only the active form of B12 that the body can use.
Optimal value: more than 50 pmol/l ( values below 35 pmol/l may indicate a deficiency). - Methylmalonic acid (MMA) - its elevated levels indicate a B12 deficiency at the cellular level.
Optimal value: below 0.27 µmol/l ( values above 0.4 µmol/l indicate a deficiency). - Homocysteine - high levels can signal problems with B12, B6 and folic acid metabolism.
Optimal value: up to 10 µmol/l ( values above 12 µmol/l may indicate B12 deficiency).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is hydroxocobalamin better than methylcobalamin?

About the company
Founded in 1991, Metabolics is a small family-run company based in the south-west of the UK in Wiltshire, specialising in the manufacture of pure dietary supplements without binders and fillers.
Since its inception, it has focused on providing the highest quality nutritional supplements to customers around the world.
Quality and cleanliness are the key elements of work at Metabolics. Only the highest quality raw materials are used to ensure maximum customer satisfaction.
History METABOLICS
The company was founded in 1991 and has been providing its customers with the highest quality nutritional and health supplements ever since.
Metabolics specializes in pure dietary supplements without the use of binders, liquid and firming agents or fillers.
The Society was founded by Alison Astill-Smith, a fully registered and experienced osteopath who trained at The British School of Osteopathy.
Alison was unhappy with the quality of the nutritional supplements that were available for use in her practice, so she decided to set up Metabolics to offer other practitioners and individuals the highest quality nutrition.
Alison also runs informative seminars across the UK and the rest of Europe, providing GPs with a wealth of information on nutrition for health and wellbeing, contributing to their CPD classes.
How it works METABOLICS
Metabolics is completely dedicated to providing the highest level of purity and quality in all of its supplements.
At Metabolics, there is a rule that applies to their entire product line - "Quality Out, Quality In".
Most capsules contain only the active ingredients and nothing else. If the amount of active ingredient is too small to produce a usable product, we add a single filler, namely "vegetable cellulose".
Cellulose is a plant-derived fibre that the body cannot digest, but when the active ingredient in the capsule is released and absorbed; the cellulose simply passes harmlessly through the body.
The encapsulation process is carried out at our manufacturing facility in Wiltshire, which is equipped with the latest technology to ensure that products are produced to the highest standards.
Random batch testing is carried out to ensure that all products meet these very high standards, while at the same time samples are taken after cleaning the equipment to ensure that there is absolutely no possibility of contamination or impact on standards.
Standards METABOLICS
Nothing is added to the dietary supplements from Metabolics.
Only purified water, purified to 18.2 MΩ, is added to all Metabolics liquid dietary supplements. This makes it possible to create liquid dietary supplements with water that is as pure as water can be.
The company is proud to include no hidden fillers, emulsifiers, binders, lubricants or stabilizers in any Metabolics dietary supplements.
This means no magnesium stearate, stearic acid, polyvinylpyrrolidone and sodium carboxymethylcellulose. Nothing that could interfere with the active ingredients contained in any Metabolics product to make them as effective and pure as possible.
The supplements you find in some other well-known products are not there for your benefit. Some other manufacturers use them to make their products easier to manufacture or to make them more aesthetically appealing. It's important to note that some of these additives are machine lubricants, added to make machines run smoother and faster and reduce production costs.
All Metabolics machines are semi-automatic, meaning they operate without added lubricants and are housed in a state-of-the-art cleanroom facility.
Production and quality in clean rooms
At Metabolics, all of their products are manufactured in the UK in their state-of-the-art clean room manufacturing facility.
As far as is known, there is no other UK manufacturer of dietary supplements with the same standard of manufacturing facilities.
If you would like to see a short video of their production facility, you can here: The video highlights how the company goes to great lengths to ensure the quality of all their products, and also shows a behind the scenes look at the production of dietary supplements from formulation to encapsulation.
Accreditation
They are also accredited to ISO:9001 and ISO:14001 standards to help customers gain confidence not only in Metabolics as a company, but also in our entire range of dietary supplements.
Metabolics products are manufactured under the strict rules of GMP & HACCP certification, a rigorous set of requirements that ensure dietary supplements are consistently produced and controlled to a high standard.
This demonstrates the manufacturer's ability to produce dietary supplements that meet the industry's high standards of quality and safety.
In addition, the company uses the ISO 9001:2015 quality management system to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
They also have the ISO 14001:2015 standard, which allows us to measure and improve our environmental performance.
