Astaxanthin is extracted from the freshwater microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, because although the carotenoid itself is found in food, its absorbable amount is so small that it must be supplemented in the form of a nutritional supplement, preferably from these algae.
All foods that are orange in colour, e.g. carrots or salmon, contain the carotenoid astaxanthin. However, to get the equivalent of 12 mg (1 dose) of this ingredient from e.g. salmon, you would have to eat about 2 kg of this fish at a time, preferably in raw form. And to do that, you'd have to find it in a form that isn't full of heavy metals and hormones.
To make this powerful antioxidant really work, it is combined with natural MCT oil (from coconut). This not only ensures a pleasant taste, but also increases bioavailability many times over.

A high amount of astaxanthin is present in resting cells and is produced and rapidly accumulates when environmental conditions become unfavourable for normal cell growth. Examples of such conditions are bright light, high salinity and low nutrient availability."[2]
Haematococcus pluvialis is usually found in temperate regions around the world. Their resting cysts are often responsible for the blood-red colouration seen at the bottom of dried-up rock pools and bird baths. This staining is caused by astaxanthin, which is thought to protect resting cysts from the harmful effects of UV radiation when exposed to direct sunlight[3].
