Chlorophyll is the substance that gives green plants their colour. It provides photosynthesis (= oxygen production) for plants and is therefore their "elixir of life". However, chlorophyll is also of great interest to humans.

Benefits
A deodorant that works 'from the inside'
Chlorophyll may have odour reducing properties. Scientists have been researching chlorophyll as a deodorant for many years.
A study published in 1960 suggested that chlorophyll may reduce odour in people who had colostomies. Later, a 1989 study found that chlorophyll was not effective in controlling odor in people who had colostomies. However, a 1980 study noted that chlorophyll improved lower body odour in elderly people living in nursing homes.
The most recent study in people with trimethylaminuria, a condition that causes fishy smell, found that chlorophyllin significantly reduced the amount of trimethylamines. Today, some deodorants and mouthwashes contain chlorophyll.
Skin and skin wound support
Chlorophyllin has shown possible effects on reducing inflammation and bacterial growth in skin wounds. A 2008 review of wound care research included several studies on ointments containing papain-urea-chlorophyllin.
Although individual studies have found this ointment to be more effective than other treatments, reviewers note that larger and better-controlled studies are needed to confirm these findings.
Chlorophyllin may also be effective for other skin problems, as evidenced by the results of two pilot studies. A pilot study is a small-scale preliminary study that is conducted before a larger study or trial.
In a 2015 pilot study on 10 people with acne and large pores, skin improved with topical application of chlorophyllin gel for 3 weeks.
Another pilot study in 2015, also involving 10 people, found that using topical chlorophyllin for 8 weeks improved sun-damaged skin.
