Behind the brand Trafo is the company FZ ORGANIC FOOD founded by the Andringa family, which has been selling cheese since the 1960s.

Frans Andringa, founder of FZ Organic Food, focused on organic products in 1983 and gradually expanded the range to include cheese, jams, chips and other organic foods. Today the business is run by his sons Folmer and Bjorn Andringa. It is a third generation family business with a long tradition.

The Trafo brand was founded in 2001 by Jan de Vries, who had a vision to bring high quality and healthy snacks to the market. The company has quickly established itself as a leader in innovative products focusing on natural ingredients and sustainability. Innovation plays a key role in the Trafo crisps manufacturing process. The company uses modern technologies such as drying wall and vacuum baking, and implements an advanced pulsed electric field (PEF) production process.

These innovations not only minimize acrylamide formation, but also improve product quality and efficiency. With these steps, Trafo is setting the standard for healthier, high-quality organic crisps, reflecting their commitment to sustainability and healthy eating.

Reducing Acrylamide and Promoting Sustainability

Our latest innovation is a highly advanced pulsed electric field (PEF ) production process that allows us to significantly reduce the acrylamide* content of potato products. This technology not only reduces acrylamide levels but also improves product quality, efficiency and sustainability of Trafo's operations.

This project, supported by co-funding from the European Union, opens up new possibilities.

*Acrylamide is a chemical that is formed during high-temperature preparation of certain foods such as frying, baking or grilling, especially in starch-rich products. This substance is considered a potential carcinogen, which means that long-term exposure to acrylamide may increase the risk of cancer. In addition, acrylamide has been linked to nervous disorders, as it can negatively affect the nervous system, and its health effects are still being investigated, with international organisations such as the WHO recommending limiting its intake.

Trafo works with fresh ingredients and works directly with local farmers to produce our chips. They share the same passion for a beautiful natural product that means:

How did it all start?

The beginnings of a family business

The Andringa family started their business in the 1960s in Leeuwarden, selling cheese.

In 1983, however, Frans Andringa changed the direction of the company and switched to organic products, inspired by macrobiotic cuisine and organic farming.

He focused on research into organic production and launched a genuine organic cheese in Germany, where it quickly became a success.

He soon expanded the range to include other organic products such as jams, honey and peanut butter.

Pioneers in organic food

They pioneered the first processed organic products at German trade fairs and were a great success.

In 1985, they launched their Yakso brand, which offered organic products for the preparation of Asian and vegetarian dishes.

In 1989, growing demand necessitated a move to larger premises in Friesland, where they could expand production and output.

In the 1990s, the company launched the Bionova and Biofan brands, which focus on organic foods for healthy eating. It was also during this time that they discovered a unique way of making organic chips, which became the basis of their Trafo brand.

In 2003, the fourth generation of the Andringa family took over the business and continues to innovate and expand the range with more than 300 products available in over 40 countries.

Since 2017, Trafo has focused on sustainability, expanding its production facilities and introducing solar panels. The company prides itself on producing without chemical preservatives and uses innovative methods such as vacuum frying to preserve the natural flavours and nutritional value of its products.
