What is selenium and why do we need to supplement it?

The essential trace element selenium is often greatly underestimated because as humans we take in selenium through food. The human body retains 13 to 30 mg of selenium. Most of it is stored in the muscles and thyroid gland^[1].

The best sources of selenium from food include steamed nuts, white beans, tuna, eggs, coconut pulp (you can find the grated or flaked version in organic quality directly from the producer in Ceylon, packed at the source, there is no contamination and no raw material contamination) and Brussels sprouts. Functions of selenium

Selenium has many functions for humans. It protects our cells from oxidative stress, supports the immune system and contributes to normal thyroid function. Furthermore, selenium has a positive effect on hair quality and growth.

In other words, selenium creates important proteins that strengthen the immune system and prevent cell damage. Selenium also enhances the function of vitamin E and vitamin C as defensive vitamins.

Together with iodine, selenium produces thyroid hormones that increase sperm production and maintain good nervous system function. Without selenium, the intestines and pancreas would not be able to perform their functions of digestion and blood sugar maintenance ^{[3, 4]}.

Selenium and heavy metals: Selenium can help the body bind the heavy metal lead. Lead in its bound form can no longer harm the human body and is more easily excreted ^[5].

Who needs selenium as a dietary supplement?

In addition to people with dietary selenium deficiency, the following groups may also be selenium deficient^{[12, 13]}:

• Smokers - this group of people should also supplement with vitamin C, for example, which they should take at least 100 milligrams a day. It also contains zinc, vitamin D3, E and B1.
• Alcoholics and other addicts - here too, preparations should be taken to at least partially prevent the destruction of organs such as the liver, pancreas, etc. We recommend organ meat.

Men should take 70 micrograms of selenium daily and women should take 60 micrograms. You can cover the daily dose with one steam nut.

What to look for in dietary supplements with selenium?

• Do not take selenium and vitamin E at the same time, as vitamin E may increase the risk of prostate cancer if selenium deficiency is not detected.
• Cancer risk may also increase if you take dietary supplements with selenium, even if you have enough selenium.
• Selenium poisoning can cause bad breath, hair loss and yellow skin discolouration.
• It is therefore recommended that you first have a blood test for selenium deficiency and consult your doctor if you suspect you are deficient in selenium.
